The JAX Innovation Award was awarded for the second time this year. The award is an initiative of Software & Support Verlag, who wants to support important European projects on everything Java, Eclipse and SOA. The Award is supposed to reflect Europe’s potential for innovative IT projects and aims at putting them at the center of attention by giving them the visibility and financial back up they need for their success. Software AG supported the JAX Innovation Award as co-sponsor for the first time.

Many high quality contributions were handed in from various European countries. Proposals came from companies, individuals, scientific research institutes and other organizations. Practically no limits were set to the nature of the contributions. A possible proposal could be an innovative software, no matter if it was a product (closed or open source), a scientific contribution, a website, blog or business idea.

Members of the jury were renowned Java, Eclipse and SOA experts: Jean Bézivin (Professor, University of Nantes, France), Matthew Langham (CEO, Indiginox), Bola Rotibi (Senior Analyst, Ovum), Ivo Totev (Vice President, Software AG) and Sebastian Meyen (Editor in Chief of Java Magazin, Program Chair JAX). The applicable evaluation criteria of the JAX Innovation Award were the innovative value of the projects, ist creativity, elegance and practical relevance.

The contribution “Groovy”, which received the first prize, was regarded as outstanding by the jury. “Groovy proves in a unique way that the Java Community is capable of substantial innovations even in the year 12 after its creation“, says Sebastian Meyen, member of the JAX Innovation Award Jury. "The project is a satisfying answer to the latest trends regarding agile, dynamic programming languages and helps users to secure their investments in the Java platform.”
